Our Family's Spring Fling with Crescent City Farmers Markets

The Geneva House family has been hitting up the Crescent City Farmers Markets every chance we get with the warmer but mild spring temps.
We started going just to grab some fresh veggies, but now it's turned into a family affair. We usually take afternoon walks at the lakefront or next to Bayou St John (and pick wild mulberries) but the farmers markets provide a new routine of walking, snacking, and filling our bags with local goodies.
Living near the Geneva house puts us in the perfect spot to visit all three market locations. Here are the details:
Uptown Market (Tuesdays)
When: 8am-12pm
Where: 200 Broadway (Market faces Leake Ave)
How far: 19 min from Geneva House or Gentilly Gem
The Scene: It’s great to arrive at this market early to get Applied Arts coffee and a dozen farm eggs before they sell out. Tartine (precursor to Toast) is right across the market on Perrier St and the Audubon Park trail is two blocks away.
Mid-City Market (Thursdays)
When: 3pm-7pm
Where: 500 Norman C. Francis Parkway
How far: 12 min from Geneva House or Gentilly Gem
The Scene: This is my after-work stop for dinner supplies. Early afternoon timing means you beat the crowds and get first pick. Nori Guys has a sushi taco that’s a perfect pre-dinner snack. Here, we walk along the Lafitte Greenway then admire the houses along the bayou. Parkway bakery is across the street from the market and always tempts us to skip cooking altogether.
City Park Market (Sundays)
When: 8am-12pm
Where: City Putt Parking Lot
How far: 11 min from Geneva House or Gentilly Gem
The Scene: Pack a blanket and make a day of it! The kids love JuiceSEE smoothies and Honest Foods Garlic Parmesan Herb loaf is amazing. Roulaison Distilling has tastings and bottles of Rum if that’s your Sunday jam. Otherwise, stroll under the oaks through the sculpture garden and watch the tourists unload from charter buses at Morning Call.
We've always been food focused at home and we enjoy the chance to find new foods while getting our steps in for the day. We encourage you to see what looks good at the market and plan meals from there instead of hunting down items on a sterile grocery aisle.
Are you interested in checking out the NOLA markets? Simply pick your day, throw a tote bag in the car and grab some cash (though most vendors take cards or Venmo now). Remember, our furnished apartments provide fully stocked kitchens and sit minutes from the freshest produce in town.
