Bucktown Harbor Farmers Market

There are some great getaways minutes from our Furnished Units in Metairie.  Now is a great time to share some of the simple fun that the lakefront has to offer.

The last several months of covid quarantine drastically changed our daily routines and provided much more leisure and family time.  There are more people getting out and doing recreational activities outside than we've ever seen before. (The weather has also been great and LA has been very easy about lockdown restrictions). We have daily family excursions and these five top our list.

1. City Park

There are plenty of attractions in the park from NOMA and the Sculpture Garden to Tennis courts and Golf courses.  We mostly enjoy strolls along the bayous under the grand oaks.  There are many paved and unpaved trails that often lead to a point of interest.  We enjoy the scenery and the chance to get the kids moving by foot, pedal or wheels.  We also look to get back to the new Childrens Museum and City Putt as the state introduces Phase 1 of reopening.  Morning Beignets and coffee at Cafe du Monde City Park are calling!

2. New Orleans Lakefront

Stroll the improved lakefront and people watch as sailboats come and go from the marina.  New Orleans lakefront is an outdoor hotspot for getting sun and fresh air.  You will find people eating, fishing, and skating along the paved waterfront.  Seafood restaurants line the marina access with moorings for hungry boaters that come and go. The New Canal Lighthouse also serves as a museum with guided tours covering the history of the area and environmental education aiming to preserve the lake and Gulf Coast.

3. Kayaks on Bayou St. John

Bayou paddlesports launches kayaks and paddleboards right under the 610 overpass.  This is a great way to add watersports to your routine and get an upper body workout.  They have youth and tandem kayaks as well as paddleboards and typically rent for two hours at a time.  Remember to pack some cold drinks and a snack for the paddle!

4. Bucktown Harbor

Dig the fresh produce and bike across the causeway at Bucktown Harbor.  Pack a bag to get fresh roasted coffee, amazing preserves, produce and meats at the Friday Farmers Market.  Take that same route from the harbor westbound past a fishing pier, dog park and the lake spanning causeway bridge.  You actually bike under the bridge as the trail continues between the lake and residential neighborhoods.  Lastly, the Bucktown Marsh boardwalk just opened to the public.  It is a great addition along with the added pavilions and ample parking in the green space.

5. Lounging in the Yard

So this might be a cop out but the yard is really spectacular with seasonal temperatures.  One of our long time “snowbirds” practically lives on the patio three months of the year.  Light up the grill or swing in the hammock watching the clouds drift by.  I am admittedly biased about this entry but I can’t take for granted something I worked so hard for just steps from the building.  It truly is a suburban oasis.
